Chinese Calligraphy & Brush Painting Workshop

Introduction to Chinese language and culture through Chinese brush painting and calligraphy with Wellington-artist Stan Chan. Learn about Chinese art materials and traditional calligraphy techniques to paint and write your own works.

This workshop will cover Chinese brushes, ink stick, ink stone and rice paper. Learn Chinese brush holding techniques, making the ink with ink stone and ink stick and explore Chinese black painting ink used in painting and calligraphy.

Stan will demonstrate Chinese brush painting and Chinese calligraphy styles to paint and write with brushes for students to follow.

This workshop is a part of our exhbition Guy Ngan: Habitation.

Stan Chan practices both traditional Chinese brush painting and Western oil and watercolour techniques. He studied art while living in Hong Kong in the 1960s. Stan came to New Zealand in 1972 and worked as an art director for many corporations.

In 1979 he set up his own studio and since then has worked as a full time artist and freelance art director. Stan has taught art classes at the Inverlochy Art School, Art Societies, and given painting talks demonstrations at school, and museums. Stan is now working and teaching painting and calligraphy at his inkLink Art Studio in Left Bank, Cuba Mall, Wellington City Centre.
