For Solo 2014, Karl will be painting a large nine metre work based on hydrangeas at the Wellington Botanical Gardens.

The work will occupy a single wall in our largest gallery space. Karl loves the narratives that viewers create for themselves as they enter his paintings.

“I’m interested in all the cultural associations we all have with the idea of the garden. They are a central part of the idea of civilisation, the first instance of humans asserting their control over nature.”

Karl Maughan was born in Wellington in 1964 and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Elam School of Fine Arts. He has been exhibiting ever since and has had examples of his work acquired by the Saatchi Collection and the Arts Council England. He was based in the East End of London for over ten years and returned to New Zealand in early 2005.

His works are painted in oils and often on a large scale. In 2008 he painted a five metre oil painting of rhododendron flowers which he then carefully cut into boutique wine labels.
