Find joy in the mess: Keeping kids creative in your bubble

Author: Steph McDonald, Communications Manager

"As educators, we encourage play, creativity, mistakes, imagination, mess and exploration! As Mums, we don’t want homemade slime in the carpet, felt pen on the duvet and arguments over sellotape."

Our amazing education team introduces a weekly The Dowse Art Challenge for kids.

As educators at The Dowse, we know how lucky we are that our work days are spent with excited tamariki visiting our museum to explore and create. Where kindness, enthusiasm and art are the only tools we need to engage and connect with children on their big learning adventure to The Dowse.

As educators, we encourage play, creativity, mistakes, imagination, mess and exploration!

As Mums, we don’t want homemade slime in the carpet, felt pen on the duvet and arguments over sellotape.

We are adjusting to this temporary new normal. Like many others, we are balancing our work and our children.

Our challenge is to spend time with our own kids in the way that we would as educators:

To move slower
To create
To find joy in the mess
To talk
To accept mistakes
To explore

We will be sharing art and craft ideas created by our educator selves and take this journey with you as parents.

We would love for you to join us for a weekly art challenge.

Some will be designed to do together and others opportunities for distraction while you have a well-deserved cup of coffee and some space.

Stay tuned for more updates – the first creative idea will be coming to your inbox and The Dowse social media (@thedowse) this week, and we’d love to see what you create.
