EMIL MCAVOY, SUBJECT AUTOBIOGRAPHY (DETAIL), 2014. COURTESY OF THE ARTIST

This is the cup of your heart is an exhibition that brings together artworks exploring memory, longing, and grief. Curated by 2015 Blumhardt Curatorial Intern, Alice Tappenden, she says she wanted the exhibition to present these ideas without feeling overly sentimental.

In this episode of the podcast we use this exhibition as a grounding from which to explore how these topics are, and have been, explored in artworks. Courtney Johnston, Director of the Dowse Art Museum, Alice Tappenden, Curator of this is the cup of your heart, and Ruby Joy Eade, one of the artists featured in the exhibition sat down to discuss the ways in which artists are not only creators, but also editors, which allows them to allude to and invoke emotion, without becoming overbearing or mawkish.
