Simon Morris: Rainscreen
On permanent display
in the Dowse Square
Rainscreen, the large perforated aluminium structure that adorns the façade of the building.
It was developed by Athfield Architects (architects of 2006 'TheNewDowse'
redevelopment), artist Simon Morris, and Lower Hutt-based firm Fraser Engineering Group.
Architecturally Rainscreen provides The Dowse with a distinctive and expressive visual identity. Functionally it contributes to the energy efficiency of the building. The screen's moveable panels are designed to manage solar heat. This both reduces the air conditioning load to the upper galleries and ensures a more comfortable cafe environment.
Commissioned by The Dowse Foundation.
