Our top 5 unique Christmas gift ideas – For something a little bit different

Author: Arpi Dutta, Communications Manager

It’s time to cut through the Christmas chaos, and fill in the blanks on your gifting to-do list. Lucky for you, we have a great selection of gifts made by locals that you may not find online or in other stores around town. So come and get something a bit different for those last few people on your list.

Sara Hughes Magnets

Here’s something special for budding artists or creatives looking for inspiration. New Zealand artist Sara Hughes’ major interactive artwork she conceived for the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in 2019, inspired her to create an amazing magnet set for her kids, and now for everyone else! Brand new to our store, these enormous sets come with a large poster base, so you can create art, trial ideas or get into a creative free flow at home to your hearts content. Awesome for kids or adults!

We have so many wonderful New Zealand jewellers that it’s impossible to just choose one to feature. There’s something for everyone - silver, ceramic, gold, brass, pounamu, pops of colour, clean lines, statement pieces, subtle accessories. The latest addition to our cabinet is Kiri Schumacher’s beautiful native flora inspired work.

Richard Holt Woodturning

Hutt Valley based wood turner, Richard Holt, has just refreshed our shelves with glorious new bowls, boxes and plates. The Dowse Art Museum has always been about craft, and to our delight it has really come back into its own over the past few years. If you know someone on board with the craft movement or aesthetic, who may already have a ceramic or two from us, a wood turned piece might just be the perfect collection addition!

Pop up book – The house of madam M

We have a small obsession with these two weird and wonderful pop up books from kiwi publishers Gecko Press! Pop up books with so much wondrous detail are scarce these days, so both kids and adults have been taking copies home to share! Definitely worth thinking about for people who love the more bizarre things in life.

Bags – Freebird or Clutch

Carry all of the things with a conscious duffle or a sassy clutch. Limited edition Freebird duffle bags are fuelled by The Common Unity Project in Lower Hutt, and proceeds go to supporting new possibilities for people in prison. Made with love from repurposed prison wool blankets, this is perfect for your caring, compassionate pal. Meanwhile, have a laugh and help your loved one socially distance with a 2020-appropriate “Please Go Away” Clutch.
