Follow Me - I'll be your Dowse Host

Author: Jen Boland, Learning Manager
When Jolie and I farewell school groups who have spent time at The Dowse on a visit with their class, we always extend a personal invitation to the children to come back and visit us in their own time. We love to see them return with whanau or friends and share some of the experiences from their school visit. It’s great that they can confidently act as hosts and that they feel so comfortable being here.

To formalise the idea of children as tour guides for their families and friends, and to make it a bit more fun, we have created “Follow Me…”  badges that children can collect (and keep) from the front desk when they come back for a visit. They just need to let the front of house host know that they’ve been here on a school visit.

The idea of the badges is to acknowledge that our children now have a relationship with the museum that can endure. We also want to empahsise the value we place on students’ learning.

So keep your eyes out for our fledgling hosts next time you are at The Dowse. They’ll be the ones regaling their loved ones with stories and information and sharing all their newfound insights. You might like to ask them a question about the gallery and see what they have to say!
